Revolutionizing Therapy and Suicide Prevention: My Guesting on the Mastering Counseling Podcast
I had the incredible opportunity to guest on the Mastering Counseling Podcast, Episode 84, titled Revolutionizing Therapy and Suicide Prevention. In this episode, Becky Coplen and I delved into the transformative landscape of telehealth and the important work being done in suicide prevention. As the founder of Synergy eTherapy, I shared my journey in establishing a fully online mental health practice well before the COVID-19 pandemic made virtual therapy the norm.
Pioneering the Path of Telehealth
From the outset, my passion for increasing access to mental health services drove me to create Synergy eTherapy. I started my practice at a time when online therapy was still a novel concept. The evolution of telehealth has been remarkable, and it has changed the way we think about mental health care delivery. In our conversation, I highlighted the challenges I faced, including navigating state licensing and insurance regulations, and the innovative approaches I employed to build a thriving practice serving clients across 40+ states.
One of the most rewarding aspects of establishing an online practice is the flexibility it provides both clients and clinicians. Telehealth eliminates geographical barriers, enabling us to reach individuals who may have previously faced obstacles in accessing care. This was a significant point of discussion, as we explored the advantages of teletherapy and the growing acceptance of virtual services.
Community Engagement and Suicide Prevention
A crucial element of our conversation was my work with Shout Out Loud, a nonprofit organization I co-founded in Minnesota, dedicated to suicide prevention and mental health awareness. Through Shout Out Loud, we strive to engage children and families in meaningful conversations about mental health. We’ve developed community-based initiatives that not only raise awareness but also create safe spaces for dialogue and support.
Suicide prevention is a pressing issue, and I emphasized the importance of community involvement in tackling this challenge. By providing resources and fostering open conversations, we can work together to reduce stigma and promote mental well-being.
Looking Ahead
As we continue to navigate the evolving landscape of mental health care, it’s clear that telehealth is here to stay. For those therapists considering a shift to teletherapy, I shared some key insights on running an online practice while keeping a healthy work-life balance. I invite you to listen to the full episode for a deeper dive into these topics and to explore how we can collectively enhance mental health services in our communities.
Thank you to Becky Coplen and the Mastering Counseling team for the opportunity to share my story and insights. Together, we can revolutionize therapy and work toward a future where mental health care is accessible for everyone.
